As Managing Director of the Investment Sales Division of Halstead Property, John brings more than 40 years of extensive and diverse experience in the commercial and investment real estate industry to the company. Responsible for the strategic growth and development of the Division, this renowned individual knows the ins and outs of the commercial industry.
The Investment Sales Division services our clients and customers, as well as the agents of Halstead Property. With established relationships and decades of experience, the Investment Sales Division is capable of handling deals ranging from small and large properties, land or occupied or vacant buildings. The Division is dedicated to ensuring a successful transaction for investors through advising on all matters including pricing, financing, bidding, portfolio analysis, strategic planning and structuring, innovative marketing and negotiations. John and the Investment Sales Division provide an experienced, talented team to run and close a deal successfully and completely.
After many years as a real estate attorney, John transitioned into becoming a developer, owner/manager, and, later, a broker at some of the leading brokerage firms in New York City. Prior to joining Halstead, he was the Executive Managing Director of Murray Hill Properties, where he sold several significant buildings and development sites in Manhattan, totaling well over $150 million, negotiated major retail leases and acted as a consultant to professional and non-professional property owners. John also served as President of Goodstein Realty Commercial, LLC and Director of Investment Sales at Brown Harris Stevens. As an investor, he purchased Harpoon Realty Limited, LLC, the oldest real estate company in Sag Harbor, which he expanded and upgraded before selling.
As a developer and owner, John was the principal in the development, renovation and conversion of many residential and loft buildings in Noho, Lolita, Tribeca, Clinton, Chelsea and the East Village, as well as several commercial and residential projects outside the City. His keen knowledge of the City and market direction allowed him to be an early investor in these developing neighborhoods.
A native of the Boston area, John is a graduate of Harvard College with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics. He also graduated from Columbia Law School (Law Review) with a JD and Stanford Law School with an LLM.
A member of The Harvard Club of New York, The National Arts Club and The Breakwater Yacht Club in Sag Harbor, John stays active in his community. He is a former trustee of Temple Adas Israel in Sag Harbor and a member of the Board of The Bridge Fund, a charity which helps prevent low-income families from evictions and a recipient of funds raised at last years Deal of the Year Award Gala. He is active in the Real Estate Board of New York, as a long-time member of the Sales Brokers Committee. He lives in Manhattan and East Hampton with his wife, Joan Spivak, and their two boys Jesse and Marcus.
